We are collecting nonperishable food items for the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore at the following Mini Price Storage locations now through November 30th.
We have collection boxes set up at each of these locations and at various apartment communities in the Southside area.
We are holding the collections because the Food Bank is in continuous need of food items, especially during the holiday seasons. Monetary donations are also welcome. The Food Bank has the ability to turn a $10 donation into $60 worth of grocery items.
This event will also help collect food for the National Backpack Program. This nationally-recognized program distributes nutritious food to children at the end of the school day, before weekends and/or school breaks. Students are identified by school personnel as being food insecure by a variety of criteria. More than 87,000 children in the Foodbank’s area are eligible to receive free or reduced-price school lunches – a reliable indicator that hunger and food insecurity regularly threaten their respective lives. At present, the Foodbank serves 53 elementary schools in our area including schools in Tidewater and on the Eastern Shore. During the 2014 fiscal year, they distributed over 55,000 bags to over 3,100 students through this Program.
